What Is The Seeing Eye? America's First Guide Dog School, Right Here in Morristown

The Seeing Eye is the oldest guide dog school in the world. Founded in 1929, it has been based in the Morristown area for nearly a century, breeding, raising, and training dogs that go on to guide people who are blind or visually impaired all across North America. The phrase "Seeing Eye dog" that everyone uses? It's actually this organization's trademark — and it was born here.

The school operates from its main campus on Washington Valley Road, with a downtown training center at 14 Maple Avenue, just steps off the Green. That downtown location is the reason guide-dogs-in-training are part of everyday Morristown life: instructors bring dogs and students into town daily to practice on real curbs, real traffic, real train platforms, and real crowds. Our sidewalks are, quite literally, the classroom.

There's even a permanent tribute on the Green: a beloved bronze sculpture honoring The Seeing Eye's co-founder Morris Frank and his dog Buddy, the pair who started it all. It's one of the most photographed spots downtown, and if you're new in town, it makes a perfect first stop on a walking tour.

Free programs run two Thursday mornings and one Saturday morning per month, from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. Demand is high and seating is limited, so reservations need to be made well in advance by emailing visit@seeingeye.org or calling (973) 539-4425 ext. 1775.

Downtown "Walk & Learn" events

Offered in a limited series each spring and fall, these ticketed programs ($25 donation per person) begin with a presentation and tour of the downtown training center at 14 Maple Avenue, then take you about a mile through Morristown's streets alongside a Seeing Eye graduate and their dog. It's the single best way to understand what those dogs you see downtown are actually doing. Ages 12 and up; preregistration required.

The Seeing Eye Gala — June 10, 2026

This year's gala, presented by Royal Canin, takes place Wednesday, June 10, 2026 at Mountain Ridge Country Club in nearby West Caldwell. It's one of the signature charitable evenings on the local calendar and a great window into how deeply this community supports the school's mission.
